Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs)

Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs)

Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) are being phased out by the end of 2024

As Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) cards are being phased out at the end of 2024 many will list a ‘valid until’ date of 31 December 2024, but the actual visa expiry date may be later than this.

An online Right to Work check must always be undertaken when a BRP is presented regardless of end date (as BRPs are no longer accepted as evidence of right to work). The online right to work check will confirm the correct expiry date. Guidance on undertaking an online Right to Work check can be found here: Entitlement to work in the UK – People, Performance and Culture (lincoln.ac.uk)

Those whose visas, or ILR, were granted many years ago may not be able to view or prove their visa or ILR details online. They will therefore need to register for a UKVI account at some point in 2024 when the Home Office launches a system to enable this. The Home Office provides some information on this here: online immigration status (eVisa) guidance and should update this guidance when the system is launched. PPC will also provide further updates when more details are known.
