Equality Impact Assessment

Equality Impact Assessment

An Equality Impact Assessment (EIA) is a tool that helps the University make sure that our policies, procedures, and practices do what they are intended to and are fair and inclusive (i.e., do not present barriers to participation, or disadvantage anyone) for all staff, students, and visitors.

Carrying out an EIA helps support good decision making.  It involves systematically assessing the actual or likely effects of our activities on people with the nine protected characteristics defined in the Equality Act 2010.  The protected characteristics are:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender Reassignment
  • Marriage and Civil Partnership
  • Pregnancy and Maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex
  • Sexual Orientation
  • Additional (non-protected) characteristics include Caring Responsibilities, Socio-Economic Background, and Gender and Gender Identity / Expression

The EIA process includes looking for opportunities to promote equality and inclusion, as well as identifying possible negative adverse impacts which can be mitigated or removed.

Most new policies or procedures will need an EIA carrying out.  If a policy is changed or revised an EIA will also normally be needed. Our EIA guidance can help you to carry out an EIA as effectively as possible and assist if you are unsure if an EIA is necessary.

The process is summarised in this our EIA process flowchart

The Digital EIA Platform

The EIA platform is the space for you to record everything you have done to assess the impact of your policy.  It also helps you to develop an action plan to remove or mitigate any adverse impacts you identify:

Actions and Mitigations

Impact management is a key part of carrying out an effective EIA. Our guidance on EIA actions and mitigations can help you to better understand the purpose and the importance of effective impact mitigation and can assist in building an effective mitigation action plan.
