Your Probation & Beyond
At Lincoln we want you to have the best possible start in your new role. Your probationary period provides the space and time for you and your line manager to meet regularly to ensure you are settling in, understand the requirements of the role and identify any development needs.Â
For academic and research staff, the probation period is 12 months and for professional service staff, the period is 6 months.  In the majority of cases, the probationary period is completed entirely satisfactorily and the appointment is confirmed.

Beyond Your Probation
Following a successful probation period, there are still plenty of ways for you to immerse yourself in the development opportunities the university can offer. We see development as a two-way process, your line manager will be able to support you with this but if there is anything you specifically want to learn or skills you want to develop, speak to your line manager to see what options may be available. We encourage regular one-to-one meetings and appraisals so that you can continue to access any support and resources you need.
Understanding Our Appraisal Schemes
At the University of Lincoln, we are committed to supporting your professional growth and development. Our appraisal schemes are designed to provide a structured framework for feedback, goal-setting, and career progression.
Key Features of Our Appraisal Schemes
- Performance and Development Reviews (PDRs): Tailored for Professional Service Staff, this scheme focuses on reflecting on achievements, setting objectives, and planning for future development.
- Annual Academic Planning Review (AAPR): Designed for academic and research staff, this scheme emphasises celebrating accomplishments, identifying priorities, and outlining goals for the year ahead.
- Training and Support: We offer comprehensive training sessions for both appraisees and appraisers to ensure the appraisal process is effective and meaningful.
Appraisals are more than just a review—they are an opportunity to align your personal goals with the university’s mission, receive constructive feedback, and explore opportunities for growth.
We encourage all new starters to familiarise themselves with the appraisal schemes and take advantage of the resources available. For detailed information, please visit our .
